GBTS Community Events

OPEN TO GARDEN CLUB MEMBERS AND NON-MEMBERS

If you enjoy gardening on any scale -- from houseplants to a container on your balcony to a bed of native pollinators in your yard -- check this page from time to time to find out if there is a community event you might enjoy. Of course we will notify you about plant sales, book signings and other events offered by the members of Gardeners by the Sea, but we will also provide information about events sponsored by local nurseries and botanic gardens in the region.  NOTE: Community events are updated monthly.

Goat Plum Tree Farm LLC

Matthew Harhai, Founder/Farmer

The Gardeners by the Sea Club is invited to our up coming classes in March. We will host three in Berlin at our farm (3/9, 3/15, and 3/16), and one at the Inland Bays Garden Center in Bethany Beach. We will present a one hour PowerPoint about mushroom biology, when to harvest logs for mushroom cultivation, how and when to fruit the mushrooms, and other aspects of simple, low-tech growing methods. The second hour will feature hands-on instruction for each attendee to make their own shiitake mushroom log. If properly cared for, the logs will fruit mushrooms for 3-4 years each spring and fall. Shiitakes are anti-arthritic, anti-viral, anti-carcinogenic, full of fiber, protein, and are a great, rare food source of Vitamin D. Making mushroom logs is fun for all ages. Logs are a great way to teach young and adult children about natural processes we rely on such as recycling by fungi.  Phone for information and pricing: 443-735-4575.
